COMMITTEES

CONTACTS

Amicus Committee
The Amicus Committee reviews requests for participation as amicus curiae in cases of interest to NAWL members. The Committee recommends appropriate cases to the President for the Board's consideration. The Committee reviews amicus briefs drafted by other organizations and considers the appropriateness of NAWL’s signing on to the brief. In other cases, NAWL drafts its own amicus brief and sometimes solicits other organizations’ joining NAWL in its amicus brief. A sampling of issues on which NAWL has provided amicus support includes enforcement of Title IX, employment discrimination, women’s health and domestic violence issues.

Diversity Initiative
NAWL President Holly English has commissioned a special committee chaired by Board member Carol Robles-Román to examine and enhance NAWL’s diversity practices and procedures. The goal is to increase outreach, recruitment, retention and substantive programs to attract and retain lawyers of diverse communities nationwide, including women of color and gay lawyers. The Committee will review existing NAWL procedures and membership protocols, work on establishing strong collaborations with other organizations, research diversity best practices, and will prepare a summary report and action plan to the NAWL board.

Mentorship Committee
The Mentorship Committee's objective is to develop mentoring relationships among NAWL's membership. The Committee was formed in response to studies that point to mentoring relationships as a key reason for a lawyer's success. The Committee's first initiative, launched in 2007, paired practicing lawyers with law students around the country. This year-long program will extend through 2008. We are excited about the possibilities for expanding our mentoring initiatives to a broader group of members. Stay tuned for announcements from the Committee on our next initiative! In the meantime, we welcome members to sign-up below if interested in participating in the Committee's future efforts.

Program Committee
The Program Committee plans educational and social programs for NAWL's annual, midyear, and regional meetings, and other events. The Program Committee is chaired by the President-Elect of NAWL. At our 2007 annual meeting in San Francisco, NAWL co-sponsored a luncheon with the National Conference of Women's Bar Associations honoring Justice Barbara Jones and featuring keynote speakers Stella Odife and Senator Barbara Boxer. This year, the programming committee is co-sponsoring a number of events throughout the country, including the Texas Women Lawyers Annual Event, ABA Division for Public Education Law Day, and the March for Freedom of Choice. In addition to putting together awards luncheons for the annual and midyear meetings, we are planning all day programs in New York City, Washington DC, and Chicago geared towards helping women in law firms succeed in the long run.
