Women, Peacebuilding, and Advancing the Rule of Law
Women are an important part of the peacebuilding equation. Too often they are excluded or marginalized in the peace process. Women can be agents of change, advocates for justice and peace, and leaders in reestablishing rule of law. The panelists will discuss the critical role of women in peacebuilding as well as comment on the recent UN Security Council report on Resolution 1820 on Women, Peace and Security.

Join NAWL Survey on the Retention and Promotion of Women in Law Firms Discussion Group on LinkedIn
On October 26, 2009, the NAWL and the NAWL Foundation released the results of the fourth annual Survey on Retention and Promotion of Women in Law Firms. The Survey is the only national study of the nation’s 200 largest law firms which annually tracks the progress of women lawyers at all levels of private practice, including the most senior positions, and collects data on firms as a whole rather than from a subset of individual lawyers. The 2009 Survey underscores that women are significantly under-represented in the upper levels of law firms and that the large majority of women who start as associates in firms do not advance to equity partnership and even fewer become law firm leaders.
This forum is for NAWL members to discuss the findings and issues raised in the NAWL Survey Report on the Retention and Promotion of Women in Law Firms, as well as insights into furthering the advancement of women in the profession.

Connecting the Dots: Why Business Development is the Most Important Tool in Your Career Development
Presented by Jennifer Levin
Nate & Dot founder Jennifer Sara Levin will present NAWL members and friends with: “Connecting the Dots: Why Business Development is the Most Important Tool in Your Career Development” on Thursday, September 24th. This popular presentation explains the increasingly important role that business development plays in career development and breaks down the necessary steps for beginning to develop business or enhancing existing client relationships. The program begins by taking a broad look at the changing legal industry in order to demonstrate that business development has become career currency at law firms. While billable hours might initially determine income levels and employment security, it is what you do during non-billable hours that will impact future income, job security, autonomy and leadership opportunities.
Jennifer will discuss the importance of creating a plan, building an effective network and developing the confidence to ask for business. This program introduces participants to the fundamental principles of developing, enhancing and nurturing professional relationships and provide participants with actionable tools to incorporate into their own busy lives.
Knowing your area of expertise and possessing excellent professional skills is simply not enough to move you up the organizational chart. Of course you have to do your job well, but more than ever in today’s legal environment, business development is “Queen.” Come and join us for an engaging and interactive evening and reflect on how you can use business development to enhance your career development.

“The Credit Crisis” How Compensation Practices Adversely Affect the Advancement of Women and Minorities in the Law, and How We Must Change Them
In the wake of today's economic turmoil, receiving fair “credit” for your contributions has never been more important in the practice of law. Yet, the latest research shows a divide between these shared expectations, among even the most well meaning attorneys, and the stark realities of longstanding reward systems in this country's law firms. This CLE Showcase program will explore the extent to which present practices in the profession -- such as pitching and assigning work, “counting credit,” measuring contributions, and “passing on” clients -- account for a disproportionate allocation of money and power. In response to this new data, a panel of general counsel and managing partners will address how to change these practices in order to improve advancement of women and minorities in our profession.

Retaining E-Mails and Documents: What Every In-House and Law Firm Lawyer Needs To Know to Avoid Other People's Mistakes and Ethical Errors
In a world of e-mail communication and increased regulatory scrutiny and litigation, deal lawyers and corporate counsel may be involved in matters that end up in litigation. Learn what to do to avoid an accusation of having destroyed evidence ("spoliation"), and how to advise your clients, so as to protect your clients and yourself from legal and ethical problems. In some recent cases, the litigants have found themselves making claims of work product protection that then exposed them to charges of spoliation. The seminar will take you through some of the recent cases in this area, and a panel of corporate and litigation lawyers will discuss what we can learn from these cases and how to avoid ethical problems and conflicts between claiming work product protection and not having retained all relevant documents (including e-mails).

Justice Older than the Law: the Life of Dovey Johnson Roundtree
The autobiography of a ground-breaking civil rights crusader, lawyer, and ordained minister
by Katie McCabe and Dovey Johnson Roundtree
From the streets of Charlotte, North Carolina, to the segregated courtrooms of the nation's capital, from the white male bastion of the World War II Army to the male stronghold of Howard University Law School, from the pulpits of churches where women had waited years for the right to minister--in all these places Dovey Johnson Roundtree (b. 1914) sought justice. We all lead such busy lives so “having it all” requires us to leverage our time carefully. Learn how to make the most of your time at the upcoming NAWL Annual Luncheon by attending a valuable teleconference on June 17 at 12:00 ET. Karen B. Kahn of KM Advisors and Lorraine Koc, NAWL Vice President and General Counsel of Debs Shops will share tips and techniques for enhancing your professional relationships at this special upcoming event. Between 1997 and 2007, privately held businesses owned by women grew at three times the rate of all American privately held firms. Women's companies are creating jobs and growing profits at twice the rate of all firms and are responsible for more payroll than all of the Fortune 500 combined. Clearly the model for business excellence is changing. What's going on? Five-time CEO and contributor to Fast Company and Real Business Margaret Heffernan decided to find out. After interviewing hundreds of women entrepreneurs - including Eileen Fisher and Geraldine Laybourne - who run businesses of all sizes and in all markets, Heffernan found they had strengths uniquely suited to the new economy. She discovered women have a tremendous need to achieve - and do so even without a safety net, create value by investing in staff and customers and place values at the heart of their businesses. Women are turning traditional concepts of hard and soft skills on their head, redefining power and the nature of success for our time.
This book provides a forum for women at all levels to describe and examine those choices. Sarah’s Circle, established over 30 years ago, serves over 700 women annually in the Chicago area.
Justice Older than the Law is her story, the product of a remarkable, ten-year collaboration with National Magazine Award-winner Katie McCabe, who joins us to discuss this incredible book. Dovey Johnson Roundtree’s is a vision of biblical and social justice older by far than the law, and her life story speaks movingly and urgently to our racially troubled times.

The Secret Currency of Love: The Unabashed Truth about Women, Money and Relationships
By Hilary Black
In the next couple of months, Connect, Listen and Learn is going to focus on women’s relationship with money. Specifically, we are going to look at some of the underlying issues that may block women’s efforts to becoming successful rainmakers. Our first book is the impact that Money has on our relationships. In Hilary Black’s The Secret Currency of Love: The Unabashed Truth about Women, Money and Relationships, Hilary explores the impact that money has on our connections. Through the essays of many women, she exposes home and shame, envy and security, fear and joy. At the end of the day she illustrates that money is a highly charged issue for women. Join the call and be a part of this very important, rarely discussed, taboo subject.

NAWL’s Fourth General Counsel Institute - Over 200 women in house lawyers meet in NY
What does the recent presidential election forecast for in-house legal professionals? How do you persuade management that you are the right person to lead the company as chief legal officer? What do you consider to be your career-defining moments?
These were just a few of the rich topics discussed at NAWL’s Fourth Annual General Counsel Institute, held at the Westin Times Square in New York GCI is a favorite event of many women in-house lawyers who come each year for the unique blend of substantive legal knowledge, professional skills, and advice on what it takes to be the chief legal officer of a company. We broke records this year with more than 200 women in-house lawyers from around the country.
One big conference highlight was the General Counsel Panel featuring four powerful women GCs who shared their personal experiences on the path to the c-suite. This year did not disappoint with panel members from: Prudential Financial, Valero Energy, Alcon Laboratories, and Lincoln Center.
First up was an interactive session on strategic planning for a fictional corporation with the goal of increasing productivity and maintaining morale in the face of an upcoming acquisition. Other timely topics included CLE workshops on: “Securities Laws You REALLY Need to Know,” “Financial Experts: Multiplying Their Effectiveness,” “Structuring Ethics and Compliance Programs,” and “The State of Data Privacy in the U.S. and in Europe.”
For obvious reasons the panel on “The Next Four Years in Washington” was a popular draw. Participants enjoyed a lively and candid discussion among Senator Tim Hutchinson, Congressman Albert Wynn (both now with Dickstein Shapiro) and Jenifer Verdery, Director of Workforce Policy at Intel Corporation, on business issues including the state of regulation and the future of class actions under the new administration.

Networking Skills for Women Lawyers, Accountants, and Business Executives – Two Dates & Two Locations!
Featuring Susan Sneider, author of "A Lawyer’s Guide to Networking," and Gary Pines, noted business development trainer and coach. This highly interactive training program will move participants past the theory of networking to developing actionable individual game plans to enhance the value of their networks. The goal of this program is to teach participants to shift from an ad hoc, reactive process to a disciplined practice of creating focused partnerships. They will learn how to craft a personalized “elevator pitch,” to analyze their current contacts, to build relationships and to maintain and nurture their networks. They will understand the relationship between business development and networking as well as understand the critical differences between them. Participants will find the session’s networking principles immediately applicable and actionable. Everyone will walk away with important “lessons learned” about not only what to do but how to do it. This seminar, which is appropriate for both new and experienced professionals, includes presentations, individual exercises and small and large group discussions. There are no prerequisites and no advance preparation is required for this program—except for an upbeat attitude. The program will provide both New Jersey and Delaware CLE credit.
