Celebrate International Women’s Day 2010 with CARE!
Building on the success of the 2009 International Women’s Day event, A Powerful Noise LIVE, CARE and partner organizations are planning to bring together thousands of people in theaters across the country to celebrate, learn and take action to empower women and girls in the fight against global poverty in 2010.
On Thursday, March 4th, 2010 at 7:30pm, CARE will present Half the Sky LIVE in movie theaters nationwide. Inspired by the best-selling book from Pulitzer-prize winning journalists Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, Half the Sky LIVE will celebrate International Women’s Day with musical performances, celebrity commentary, and the world premiere of Woineshet, a powerful short film directed by Academy Award® Winner Marisa Tomei.
As featured on Oprah, CNN, and Dateline NBC, Half the Sky remains a New York Times bestseller and a critical favorite across the globe. With Half the Sky LIVE, you can watch the pages of the book come to life onscreen. The inspiring short film, Woineshet, chronicles the struggles of a young Ethiopian woman who fights back against a brutal law stating that a man could not be prosecuted for sexually assaulting a woman or girl who he later offered to marry. Vowing to prosecute her own rapist, Woineshet gains the help of women activists around the world and the Ethiopian Women Lawyers Association to ultimately force a change in her country's legal code.
Broadcast to theaters across the country, this one-night-only event – featuring appearances by Nicholas Kristof, Dr. Helene Gayle of CARE and others – will motivate you to participate in the growing movement to empower women and girls in the fight against global poverty. Half the Sky LIVE is the perfect way for NAWL members, and your firm's women's initiative, to celebrate International Women’s Day together and stand in solidarity with women and girls all over the world. CARE will develop a discussion guide and other tools to help you make the most of the event.
Visit halftheskylive.com for theater locations (which are still being added) and to watch the film trailer. Also, email groups@care.org to let CARE know about your plans to participate to learn about special engagement opportunities for NAWL members, or to inquire about purchasing larger quantities of tickets for your group.

4th Annual Meet & Match
hosted by WomenOnCall.org
WomenOnCall.org is a not-for-profit organization that matches professional women with a desire to volunteer, but limited time, with other not-for-profit organizations. Typically, these organizations need about an hour's worth of assistance in a variety of areas: legal, finance, marketing, advertising, and leadership development – just to name a few. The Meet N’ Match event is modeled on a speed dating concept – potential professional volunteers can learn more about the not-for-profit members of WomenOnCall.org that are in need of assistance, and then participate in a networking reception to connect with the other professionals in attendance. At the 2009 event, participants networked with over two-hundred professional women. Participants only agree to attend the Meet N’ Match event; attendance does not require participants to commit to any volunteer opportunities.
If you are interested in attending, please register by Wednesday, February 10th. Click here to register.
Please contact diversity@navigantconsulting.com if you have any questions concerning this event.

The Male Factor
by Shaunti Feldhahn
Remember reading the book Stranger in a Strange Land? Well, The Male Factor by Shaunti Feldhahn describes the “strange land” that women go to every day when they go to work and don’t realize how different it is from their own “country.” Based on hard core research that consisted of a nationwide survey and confidential interviews with more than three thousand men, this book presents an unprecedented description of how men in the workplace tend to think and the expectations that they have of women with whom they work. The mismatch Feldhahn points out is significant and imperative for women to know about in order to succeed. This is not the “typical” “Mars Venus” book, rather, because the men in the surveys and interviews were guaranteed anonymity, they spoke in a candid and uncensored way about their daily interactions with women bosses, employees, and colleagues, as well as what they see as the most common forces of friction and misunderstanding between men and women at work. Join us to gain an invaluable understanding of how your male partners, colleagues, associates and clients are likely to react to a host of situations—as well as the ability to correct common misperceptions. The Male Factor offers a unique road map to what men in the workplace are thinking, allowing women the opportunity to decide for themselves how to use the insights.

Diversity on the Bench: Is the “Wise Latina” a Myth?
The recent Supreme Court confirmation hearing of Justice Sonia Sotomayor was dominated by 32 words excerpted from one of her many speeches: “I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life.” The notion that judges’ decision making might be affected by their gender and race or ethnicity is repugnant to those who view “judging” as the sterile, bloodless, objective disposition of cases, without regard to judges’ personal backgrounds, biases, attitudes, and ideologies.
But a growing number of studies are now demonstrating the dramatic impact that judges’ gender and race/ethnicity may have, at least in certain types of cases. What does this fascinating and provocative research mean for the justice system?

Women, Peacebuilding, and Advancing the Rule of Law
Women are an important part of the peacebuilding equation. Too often they are excluded or marginalized in the peace process. Limiting or excluding women into the peace building process in a meaningful way not only leaves a critical resource untapped, but hinders a society's recovery. Women can be agents of change, advocates for justice and peace, and leaders in reestablishing rule of law. Join NAWL Survey on the Retention and Promotion of Women in Law Firms Discussion Group on LinkedIn
On October 26, 2009, the NAWL and the NAWL Foundation released the results of the fourth annual Survey on Retention and Promotion of Women in Law Firms. The Survey is the only national study of the nation’s 200 largest law firms which annually tracks the progress of women lawyers at all levels of private practice, including the most senior positions, and collects data on firms as a whole rather than from a subset of individual lawyers. The 2009 Survey underscores that women are significantly under-represented in the upper levels of law firms and that the large majority of women who start as associates in firms do not advance to equity partnership and even fewer become law firm leaders.
This forum is for NAWL members to discuss the findings and issues raised in the NAWL Survey Report on the Retention and Promotion of Women in Law Firms, as well as insights into furthering the advancement of women in the profession.

Connecting the Dots: Why Business Development is the Most Important Tool in Your Career Development
Presented by Jennifer Levin
Nate & Dot founder Jennifer Sara Levin will present NAWL members and friends with: “Connecting the Dots: Why Business Development is the Most Important Tool in Your Career Development” on Thursday, September 24th. This popular presentation explains the increasingly important role that business development plays in career development and breaks down the necessary steps for beginning to develop business or enhancing existing client relationships. The program begins by taking a broad look at the changing legal industry in order to demonstrate that business development has become career currency at law firms. While billable hours might initially determine income levels and employment security, it is what you do during non-billable hours that will impact future income, job security, autonomy and leadership opportunities.
Jennifer will discuss the importance of creating a plan, building an effective network and developing the confidence to ask for business. This program introduces participants to the fundamental principles of developing, enhancing and nurturing professional relationships and provide participants with actionable tools to incorporate into their own busy lives.
Knowing your area of expertise and possessing excellent professional skills is simply not enough to move you up the organizational chart. Of course you have to do your job well, but more than ever in today’s legal environment, business development is “Queen.” Come and join us for an engaging and interactive evening and reflect on how you can use business development to enhance your career development.

“The Credit Crisis” How Compensation Practices Adversely Affect the Advancement of Women and Minorities in the Law, and How We Must Change Them
In the wake of today's economic turmoil, receiving fair “credit” for your contributions has never been more important in the practice of law. Yet, the latest research shows a divide between these shared expectations, among even the most well meaning attorneys, and the stark realities of longstanding reward systems in this country's law firms. This CLE Showcase program will explore the extent to which present practices in the profession -- such as pitching and assigning work, “counting credit,” measuring contributions, and “passing on” clients -- account for a disproportionate allocation of money and power. In response to this new data, a panel of general counsel and managing partners will address how to change these practices in order to improve advancement of women and minorities in our profession.

Learn what to do to avoid an accusation of having destroyed evidence ("spoliation"), and how to advise your clients, so as to protect your clients and yourself from legal and ethical problems. In some recent cases, the litigants have found themselves making claims of work product protection that then exposed them to charges of spoliation. The seminar will take you through some of the recent cases in this area, and a panel of corporate and litigation lawyers will discuss what we can learn from these cases and how to avoid ethical problems and conflicts between claiming work product protection and not having retained all relevant documents (including e-mails).
