A Year in Review
We kicked off the New Year with an engaging Book Club teleconference featuring NAWL Member Kate McGuiness's book, Terminal Ambition, a novel about Maggie Mahoney, an attorney who wants justice for women at her firm. In February, questions for NAWL's Survey on the Promotion and Retention of Women in Law Firms were distributed to the AmLaw200 for completion. Data collection continued throughout February and March and the full Survey Report was released in September.
Our 2017 Mid-Year Meeting & Awards Luncheon in Chicago focused on shaping the future of the profession and partnering for progress. We recognized leading lawyers who made a significant impact on improving and diversifying the profession and attendees had the opportunity to attend both professional development and skills training workshops designed to help them thrive in their careers. The NAWL Women in Financial Services and Women in Public Service Practice Area Affinity Groups co-hosted a Women in Politics panel discussion in New York. The panel featured prominent women who shared their stories and discussed why women need to run for office, what it is like to be in public service, and what NAWL members could do to become involved. We connected with women lawyers in the Pacific Northwest on May 9, when we held our spring conference in Seattle. The Seattle Conference focused on key issues and opportunities that women in the legal profession face today and how we can work together to overcome challenges. By connecting with each other and dedicating a day to thinking about how to enhance our professional lives, we lifted each other and our profession. NAWL's Women in Intellectual Property & Technology Practice Area Affinity Group hosted a webinar on "How to Design a General Data Protection Regulation Readiness Assessment Program". The webinar offered practical guidance on how to develop a GDPR plan and what to do to be in compliance when the regulation goes into effect on May 25, 2018. We celebrated another successful association year of empowering women in the legal profession at our 2017 Annual Meeting & Awards Luncheon. The luncheon celebrated leaders in both our organization and the profession at large, while the morning and afternoon programming featured candid conversations on diversity, overcoming challenges, and the importance of having a supportive network. We launched the 3L Mentorship Program, creating an opportunity for experienced attorneys to provide professional advice, encouragement, and support to female law students beginning in their 3L year and continuing throughout their first year of practice. 
Our Meeting the Challenge Conference in Boston offered a forum for law firms, corporations, government, non-profits, and other stakeholders to share best practices, learn from thought-leaders, and forge the meaningful and lasting connections necessary to meet NAWL's One-Third By 2020 Challenge. In addition to programming focused on what institutions can do to increase the number of women in leadership roles, we unveiled the 2017 Report of the Survey on the Promotion and Retention of Women in Law FirmsMark your calendar for our 2018 fall regional program in Minneapolis October 5, 2018 and be among the first to hear the results of NAWL's 2018 Survey.
Members in the Bay Area showed their support for women in law and the Justice & Diversity Center of the Bar Association of San Francisco ("JDC") when they attended NAWL's Night of Giving in San Francisco on October 3. The free event included networking, community engagement, and shopping for a cause!
Our Thirteenth General Counsel Institute ("GCI 13") focused on the power of preparation and the courage to say yes. We asked attendees to challenge themselves and consider what they need to do to feel prepared, powerful, and courageous. Through inspiring stories, substantive legal workshops, and GCI's unique open exchange of ideas, GCI 13 helped attendees gain leadership skills, business acumen, and the power to say yes.
