NEW YORK – Carol Robles-Román, Former Deputy Mayor for Legal Affairs and Counsel to the Mayor of New York City, participated in the DirectWomen Board Institute from January 22-24 in New York City. DirectWomen, an organization formed to position women lawyers to serve on boards of public companies, selects a group of qualified women lawyers from a competitive pool of applicants across the country to participate in the three-day program.
At the DirectWomen Board Institute Robles-Román interacted with corporate CEOs, board directors and top recruiters in sessions on key issues facing current and future corporate directors. The Institute was co-chaired by Professor Hillary A. Sale, Walter D. Coles Professor of Law and Professor of Management at Washington University in St. Louis and Professor Lisa M. Speakers covered topics such as the role and work of nominating and governance board members, the evolving nature of shareholder relations, the strategic role of audit committees and the role of executive search firms in board searches.
Robles-Román served as Deputy Mayor for Legal Affairs and Counsel to Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, where she led reform and compliance efforts that improved public access to city services. She oversaw several city agencies and advised the Mayor and the executive branch on policy issues including judicial selection, compliance and enforcement of anti-discrimination laws, disability and access laws, domestic violence and immigration. Robles-Román began her legal career as a corporate lawyer and later joined the public sector where she held several executive posts including Special Counsel to then Chief Administrative Judge Jonathan Lippman. Her career includes executive posts in law, business and management, including her role as Senior Vice President and General Counsel of the Puerto Rico Industrial Development Company. A strong advocate of education and mentoring, she serves on the board of the National Association of Women Lawyers, as a trustee of the City University of New York where she is a member of the Fiscal Committee, Fordham University at Lincoln Center and the New York University School of Law Alumni Association. She holds a J.D. from New York University School of Law and a B.A. from Fordham University at Lincoln Center.
