Curtis Tao is the U.S. General Counsel for HSBC.
Curtis has more than 20 years of legal experience in the banking and financial services industry. Previously, he served as Deputy General Counsel at Citigroup, overseeing Bank Regulatory, Global Functions, and North America Governance Legal. Before Citigroup, Curtis was Associate General Counsel at Goldman Sachs. He began his legal career clerking for the late Judge John L. Coffey of the Federal Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, and Chief Justice Deborah T. Poritz of the New Jersey Supreme Court, and later worked at Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton. Curtis received his J.D. and B.A. from Rutgers University.
He currently serves as the chair of the Lawyers Committee for the American Bankers Association, Securities Association and was co-chair of the Practicing Law Institute, Banking Law Institute from 2019 to 2023.
